Tsomoriri and Tsokar Lakes

Tsomoriri Lake
The picturesque and deep blue lake situated at an altitude of 4530m in Ladakh and is the largest of the high Altitude Lakes in the Trans-Himalayan biogeography region. It is located between Ladakh and Tibet. The lake is surrounded by barren land and snowcapped peaks over 6000m such as Chamser, Lungser and Mentok Kangri. It is 26 km in length and about 5 km in breadth. Tsomoriri is classified as a remnant lake, meaning that it is originated from a much larger lake during glacier times. “changpas”, the nomadic migratory shepherds of yak, sheep, goats and horses of Tibetan origin are the main inhabitants of the area. The Korzok monastery on the western bank of the lake is 400 years old and attracts tourists and Buddhist pilgrimage. Many animals can be found around the lake including marmot, blue sheep, kiang, rare Tibetan wolves and migratory birds.

Tso Kar Lake
Tso Kar means “white lake” in Ladakh, the white colour comes from the thick thrust crust of salt surrounding the Lake. In the past, the lakes used to be a source of salt for the people of Ladakh and Tibet. Despite the high salinity of the water, the lake is marvelous habitat for a large number of bird species including the rare black-necked crane.
